How Biotechnologies Have Changed The World

By Kathleen Morris

Biotechnology is any technology that is based on biology. This encompasses a huge number of things that are used in most people's day-to-day lives. By harnessing both the cellular and the biomolecular processes of living creatures, biotechnologies have many ways of improving people's lives as well as improving the condition of and lowering human impact on the planet.

Modern biotechnology has enabled a vast number of advancements in science and medicine, but the practice of harnessing these biological processes found in nature has actually been around for thousands of years. People who are familiar with the way bread and cheese are made know that this is a biological process. This is also the case with preserving dairy products.

The most modern advancements in this branch of technology and biology have enabled countless breakthrough products and technologies. Some of these are able to combat diseases that are rare and difficult to treat. These breakthroughs are also enabling people to get food to needy people, lowering the environmental impact, and improving the efficiency of industrial manufacturing.

It would be an entirely different world for patients were it not for this type of technology. Because of biotechnology, a number of diseases can now be cured for which there was previously no treatment option. It is important to remember that the world of diseases and healthcare is constantly evolving and changing, and this type of technology is invaluable to keep combating the health threats.

The agricultural industry has seen many benefits thanks to the use of this technology. New innovations have made it so crops can be harvested that are resistant to certain pests like insects, which are known to be harmful and can destroy entire crops. Plants can now be grown that have greater nutritional value, which may be necessary to combat the vitamin deficiencies in today's populations.

One of the big ways that mankind is adversely impacting the environment is by burning fossil fuels, and a large percentage of that comes from cars. An alternative fuel source could be biomass, and that is what is being studied at biorefineries across the world. Not only would this fuel be less expensive and more available due to its renewable nature, it would lower greenhouse gas emissions.

One of the aims of scientists and researchers working in the field of biotechnology is to reduce the rate of infectious diseases that are always changing and growing stronger, and are a great risk to society. This could save millions of lives, especially children, who are lost to these diseases. This field of science also completely changes the way people now look at diseases that were once thought to be fatal and incurable.

One of the big problems that plagues society today is how to lower mankind's environmental impact. This is a difficult problem since there are so many ways that our behavior negatively impacts the planet. By making use of biotechnology, factories can run more efficiently, fuel can be cleaner, clothes can be washed at a lower temperature, and water usage can be lowered to produce less waste.
