Basic Information On Affordable Dentures

By Ronald Hamilton

A denture refers to a dental device that is installed in the mouth as a replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Usually there are two types of dentures in use today, that is, partial and complete. Like suggested in the name, a complete denture is installed when all natural teeth in the oral cavity have been lost, while a partial denture is installed when some natural teeth still exist. Austin, TX, is one among the best places one can find affordable dentures.

There are two classifications for complete denture, that is, conventional and immediate. Conventional denture is designed and made after removal of teeth when gums have started to heal. It takes between 8 to 12 months for them to be ready for installation. Immediate denture works in a different way in that it is designed and made before teeth removal. However, teeth are removed first before they are fitted.

Immediate denture therefore has the advantage of making it not necessary to remain without teeth during the healing process. The only disadvantage that immediate denture has over conventional denture model is that it sometimes does not fit properly. This happens because bones and gums start to shrink over time. Thus, more adjustments have to be done to immediate dentures for them to fit better. Most of the shrinking happens during the healing process.

A removable partial bridge or denture comprises of replacement teeth that are attached onto a plastic base. The color of the plastic base is made to resemble that of the gums of the patient. A metal framework is used to hold the plastic base in place within the mouth. Teeth placement is done between crowns on bridges. Partial dentures do not only replace missing teeth, but they also help teeth to maintain position.

It takes several appointment and a few weeks for a denture to be developed. The first process the dentist or prosthodontist does is to assess the mouth and the individual to determine what are the best dentures for an individual. The specialist makes several impressions of the jaws and takes measurements to understand how the jaws relate. Models, wax forms, and plastic patterns are then created for the client to try on. Shape, color, fit and other important characteristics are assessed before producing the final denture.

Some room is always left to allow adjustments to be made to the devices after they have been designed and created. One feels odd in the mouth for a couple of weeks following wearing the devices for the first time. However, the odd feeling goes away as the tongue and cheek muscles get used to the change. Increased saliva synthesis, soreness, and minor irritation may be felt for several days.

A denture is usually designed to resemble teeth closely. As such, there is only a small noticeable change in appearance. However, they improve how one smiles and fill out their facial appearance. Part or all of the cost of denture is usually covered by some dental insurance providers.

Eating is one the greatest problems that wearers of dentures face. Getting used to eating with the gadgets on takes time and practice. When practicing eating with the devices, one should experiment with soft drinks first.
