The Truth About Supplements

By Andy G Smith

Several years ago I thought that all food supplements were produced to the same standards, but I have since found that this isn't the case. From my personal research, I have found that there're a lot of factors, which affect the quality and therefore, the effectiveness of nutritional supplements. I'll outline some of these now and will explain the relevance of each of the factors discussed.

Vitamins and Minerals - The role of vitamins in the body is to support a healthy immune system and to eliminate damaging free radicals. Free radicals are created as a byproduct of chemical reactions within the body (specifically respiration and digestion) and are very reactive molecules, which attack human cells. Over extended periods of time, constant attacking of our cells by free radicals can cause the development of degenerative diseases and conditions. Therefore, an advanced consumption of antioxidants and minerals can help to minimise free radical damage and help in the fight against degenerative conditions.

Many supplements are manufactured to food grade standards, as this is all that's required to meet industry regulations in the majority of countries. However, without the control and accuracy related to pharmaceutical drug grade production standards, it is extremely difficult to guarantee the efficiency of products and proportions of nutrients.

Our requirement for vitamins and minerals is now greater than ever due to the excessively toxic environment that we live in. Environmental pollution, toxic chemicals in the water supply and greater levels of radiation from the sun validate our increased demand for anti-oxidants. Also, stress, lack of rest and bad food choices will boost free radical occurance. The food choices that we make today are regularly devoid of the essential antioxidants and minerals that we need for our bodies to function optimally.

As a former personal trainer I have the opinion that it is more sensible to provide our bodies with surplus, providing that the levels that we intake are not in harmful doses. By providing our bodies with surplus, it can absorb as much as it requires and reject what is not needed. Any vitamins and minerals that are not required are excreted and so should not negatively affect our health. Some nutritional supplements manufacturers produce nutritional products to pharmaceutical grade manufacturing standards, so they have better control of the consistency of each tablet. This also dramatically decreases the likelihood of contamination with dangerous, or banned substances. With this noted, I also recommend choosing products that are of a pharmaceutical standard.

Therefore, I suggest that if you are going to use food supplements, you should find a manufacturer that sticks to pharmaceutical drug grade manufacturing standards for best results. If you're using, or thinking about using a multivitamin and multimineral product then it might also be beneficial to make certain that the formulation contains advanced levels of nutrition.
