When the rate is too fast or too slow oxygen supply to the brain is compromised and dizziness and fainting may ensure. Anti-arrhythmic drugs are usually prescribed to maintain a regular heart rate. Extremely high or low blood pressure may also manifest in the same manner. In this case the remedy is to be compliant to antihypertensive drugs.

Diseases that affect the central nervous system also present with dizziness among other symptoms. These conditions include, for example, headache, stroke, migraine, dementia and brain tumors. A condition known as vertigo is commonly confused for dizziness by many people. It is important that these two be distinguished as their causes (and treatment options) are different. Simply put, vertigo refers to spinning sensation of the immediate surroundings. It is similar to what one feels if they have been on a merry-go-round or have been spinning on the same spot for some time. Diseases affecting the inner ear usually give rise to vertigo.

Dizziness is usually associated with several other symptoms. These include fatigue, weakness, confusion headache and nausea among others. If a single episode is experienced but is sustained for several hours, immediate medical attention is indicated. Also seek medical attention as a matter of urgency if such an episode follows the intake of medications.

Repetitive episodes, on the other hand, have to be investigated as they most likely indicate the presence of a disease.
